Safety Evaluation of Turning Maneuvers at California Intersections

Project Description

This research will provide an evaluation of the safety of California intersections in a context-sensitive manner. Specific objectives of this project include: analyze statewide collision data to identify infrastructure and/or community context(s) that contribute to conditions leading to crashes in intersections, including left turns, right-turns on red, etc.

Based on the analysis of collision data, and deeper investigations using Google Street View, we will identify context-sensitive strategies based on the safe systems approach that can address the safety concerns. The strategies would include a prohibition of the maneuver and installation of protected intersections based on NACTO recommendations, among others.

Outputs

We will seek opportunities to engage state and local stakeholders for feedback on our findings and of street and intersection redesign responses. Early partners include staff from the California State Assembly.

Outcomes/Impacts

Based on the analysis of collision data, and deeper investigations using Google Street View, we will identify context-sensitive strategies based on the safe systems approach that can address the safety concerns. The strategies would include a prohibition of the maneuver and installation of protected intersections based on NACTO recommendations, among others.
