Enhancing Safety for Vulnerable Road Users: Exploring the Impact of Funding for Unconventional Data Access on Safety Improvements, Phase II – Summit to Better Understand the Funding Mechanism for Ped/Bike Projects in State DOTs
Project Description
Despite significant progress in leveraging unconventional data for pedestrian and bicyclist safety, previous phase of the project, “Exploring the Impact of Funding for Unconventional Data Access on Safety Improvements”, has revealed limitations in assessing the impact of funding for unconventional data access, notably due to sparse literature and minimal stakeholder involvement through basic surveys. To address these gaps and build upon Phase I findings, a modest budget extension is anticipated to facilitate a summit/peer-exchange. This summit aims to gather key industry stakeholders, public sector representatives, and relevant entities for in-depth discussions, interactions, and collaborations. By fostering a deeper understanding of the current landscape and encouraging knowledge-sharing, the summit will cultivate a thriving ecosystem for emerging data, particularly crowdsourced data. Ultimately, this initiative aims to drive meaningful enhancements in pedestrian and bicyclist safety within transportation systems by harnessing the potential of innovative data sources.
Outputs
1. Stakeholder Engagement Summit/Peer Exchange:
Organize a summit/peer-exchange involving data vendors, collectors, state DOTs, city/county/region officers, and relevant stakeholders.
Facilitating discussions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions to exchange insights, challenges, and strategies for fostering a healthier ped/bike emerging data ecosystem.
2. Workgroup Sessions:
Establish workgroups to delve into specific topics such as data quality, privacy concerns, infrastructure needs, and policy frameworks.
Encourage collaborative problem-solving and idea generation to address challenges and maximize opportunities in the ped/bike data ecosystem.
Supporting the dissemination of research through conferences, including the IPIT Symposium, is integral to the CPBS UTC projects and aligns with USDOT's expectations. Leveraging existing events such as TRB ped/bike committee meetings and AASHTO committees, along with other relevant industrial gatherings, will involve co-hosting workshops to gather feedback and present project findings. Additionally, as part of the CPBS UTC consortium, UWM IPIT will maximize budget allocation by co-hosting the summit during the IPIT Symposium in November 2024.
Additionally, a standalone task of “Literature Review Enhancement” should also be conducted. Considering the potential insights garnered from the summit/peer exchange, the literature review will undergo significant augmentation. Drawing upon the collective knowledge and experiences shared by attendees, the review will incorporate fresh perspectives, emerging trends, and real-world examples.
